I recently visiting my best friend in Malibu after the devastating fires of February. It wasn't until I got to Malibu proper that the evidence of an armageddon of legendary proportion had blown through this incredible community. The National Guard had so many tanks and clean up vehicles everywhere it could have been a scene in a movie, but it wasn't. This is their new normal. My bestie is a victim of the Woolsey Fire in 2018 and they did loose their home and everything in it. It is with great sadness they recognize the journey of the next 5-10 years in the newest victims lives. Although kindred to those who lost their homes, they will not let their experience define them. Their lives have transformed, they now live in a magical fortress above Lake Malibou in a home they have rebuilt.

With a brand new recording studio in their home, my bestie's husband, an award winning musician, who does scoring for the motion picture industry, was composing music for a documentary about the lake they live on. It was such a kindred moment to recognize that after a tragedy like the Woolsey Fire, life does go on, we rebuild, and that celebrations such as these types of documentaries bring together the focus of appreciation for a life that has shaped us to be who we are.
Listening to the score while watching the documentary, we noticed the emotionality of the film blossom into a masterpiece for all to enjoy. The creative process is enlightening and inspiring. While composing music in an area that has burnt before and has most recently had forced evacuations, we all recognized that healing comes in time and that kindred souls who come together to rebuild will in fact rebuild and restore with common goals to respectfully address the challenges they all face, together.
